Brooklyn Eagle, The

Brooklyn Eagle, The (1841–1955), daily newspaper, a Democratic party organ, edited (March 1846–Jan. 1848) by Walt Whitman, whose writings for it were collected in The Gathering of the Forces (2 vols., 1920). The paper was continuously published except for a brief period in 1861 when barred from the mails for its proslavery position.
