Brandeis, Louis D[embitz] (1856–1941), became known as the “people's attorney” when, early in his career, without pay he defended Boston citizens against local public utilities. His book
Other People's Money (1914) greatly influenced Woodrow Wilson, who in 1916 appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court. His miscellaneous papers, edited as
The Curse of Bigness (1934), show him to have been continuously devoted to a social liberal point of view. After his retirement from the Supreme Court (1939), he concerned himself with aiding Jewish refugees.
On Zionism (1942) collects addresses and statements. Brandeis University (founded 1948) was named for him.
