Bowles, Jane (1917–73), New York‐born author, resident abroad for long periods as a child with her family and as an adult after marriage (1938) to
Paul Bowles. She created a reputation among the avant‐garde with
Two Serious Ladies (1943), an experimental novel about two women, one rich and prosperous, the other sensuous and sinful, whose lives touch only twice. A play,
In the Summer House (1954), and her stories,
Plain Pleasures (1966), were issued together as her
Collected Works (1966).
Feminine Wiles (1976) collects stories and sketches, another play, and letters.
