Blackfoot Indians, group of bison‐hunting Algonquian tribes in Alberta and Montana, of which the Blackfoot proper are the most prominent. They once ranged from the Yellowstone River to the Rocky Mountains, and they figure in diaries of 19th‐century plainsmen, being noted for their constant warfare with the Crow, and their unwavering hostility toward whites. In Irving's Adventures of Captain Bonneville and the Life of Beckwourth they appear as horse thieves and ruffians, but they are romantically depicted in the operas of Arthur Nevin, whose music is based on a study of native themes. G.B. Grinnell and J.W. Schultz have also written on the Blackfoot.
