Attaway, William (1911–1986), Mississippi‐born black author, reared in Chicago, graduated from the University of Illinois, and held various jobs before writing his two novels,
Let Me Breathe Thunder (1939), about two tough young white hoboes, and
Blood on the Forge (1941), about Southern black farmworkers trying to compete in Pennsylvania steel‐mill jobs. His only other book,
Hear America Singing (1967), is for children.
