Arbella, flagship of the small fleet that arrived at Salem, Mass. (June 12, 1630), carrying some 600–700 persons from England to found a Puritan colony. Unlike the Pilgrims, who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, these founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony desired to reform the Established Church, not to separate from it. John Winthrop left a record of the Arbella's voyage in his Journal.
