value-added network

value-added network A network which is formed when two or more enterprises want to communicate with each other in order to add value to a service or a product. It normally involves connecting two or more CLOSED NETWORKS together with Internet technology. An example of a value-added network would be one which connected a manufacturer with the suppliers of components used in the products made by the manufacturer. The term is often used to denote the fact that the networks are connected across a publicly accessible network such as the Internet, although it has been used for VALUE-ADDED PRIVATE NETWORKS.
