site caching The process of periodically copying frequently used WEB PAGES from an external WEB SERVER to a local CACHING PROXY SERVER or FILE SERVER within an INTRANET. This is done to speed up access to the pages by the users of the intranet and is achieved because access is usually via a fast LOCAL AREA NETWORK to the server, rather than via low-BANDWIDTH external transmission lines. The only disadvantage to this simple technique is that between downloading times the Web pages may become out of date. See also BROWSER CACHING and CACHING.
