IMAGE MAP in which the actions associated with the embedded
HYPERLINKS are processed by the
WEB SERVER which stores the
WEB PAGE in which the image is embedded. When a user clicks on an area inside a server side image map the server is sent the coordinates of the click. It then discovers which
WEB PAGE is referenced by the area in which the coordinates are contained and then sends it back to the
BROWSER for viewing. Server side image maps were used extensively in the early days of the Web. They differ from
CLIENT SIDE IMAGE MAPS where the browser itself carries out the processing required. The details of an image map are stored in an
IMAGE MAP DEFINITION FILE on the
WEB SERVER. This file is consulted to find the destination
URL associated with the area of the image map that has been clicked.
