online chat The process whereby users of the Internet engage in REAL TIME conversations using their computers. Online chat consists of these users exchanging text messages. In order to engage in online chat a CHAT CLIENT must LOG-IN to a CHAT CHANNEL and contact a CHAT SERVER. There are a large number of chat channels, ranging from those which support general conversations to those which are devoted to a specific topic.
