official standard A document which has been recognized by the INTERNET SOCIETY as a final Internet standard. Such a standard will have been under the aegis of the INTERNET ENGINEERING TASK FORCE from the point where it first saw the light of day as a REQUEST FOR COMMENT. It will then have gone through a number of documentation stages during which it will have been transformed into an INTERNET DRAFT, a PROPOSED STANDARD, and a DRAFT STANDARD.
