network operating system An OPERATING SYSTEM which administers a number of interconnected computers. It carries out a number of functions over and above those found in conventional operating systems such as providing a facade which gives the user the impression that he or she is interacting with a simple computer, managing data spread out over a number of DISTRIBUTED DATABASES, providing monitoring information which can be used in PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT, monitoring hardware faults and reconfiguring the network in order to bypass hardware that is malfunctioning, and isolating the user from system-dependent features such as addresses expressed in DOTTED QUAD NOTATION which the user does not have to know about.
