name server A server used for NAME RESOLUTION: a CLIENT provides the symbolic name of a resource and the server responds with some physical information such as an address. The INTERNET DOMAIN NAME SERVICE which consists of a number of communicating name servers which provide the IP ADDRESS of a computer, given its name, is an example of the use of a name server.
