multi user dungeon

multi user dungeon A special type of CHAT ROOM where participants engage in a role-playing game. For example, they may take on the role of travellers in a strange country looking for some highly prized object such as a soothsayer's stone. Early multiuser dungeons featured simple text input, but these have been superseded by graphics-enhanced systems where players are represented by AVATARS and where each player can construct their own character and influence the environment of the game by deploying a special-purpose programming language. Sometimes multi user dungeons are known as multi user dimensions. See also MUD OBJECT-ORIENTED. Usually abbreviated to MUD.
