metatag The metatag <META> is an HTML tag which provides ancillary information about an WEB PAGE. For example, a metatag can be used to transfer control to another WEB SITE after a specified number of seconds if the site has been moved. The main use for such tags is to provide information about a page or a site which can be used by a search engine for indexing it. See also WEB SITE PROMOTION.
