hierarchical naming

hierarchical naming The naming of resources in a system which splits the name into a number of areas and subareas: for example, if network A consisted of two SUBNETWORKS B and C, and B contained the computer named Server1 then a way of naming Server1 would be A.B.Server1. If there was a computer known as Server1 on subnetwork C then this would be named A.C.Server1. A hierarchic naming convention such as this ensures that duplication of individual names can be achieved, yet ensures that individual resources associated with a name can be uniquely identified. The best-known example of hierarchic naming is the INTERNET DOMAIN NAME SERVICE.
