document type definition Text which describes the structure of a document expressed in the XML MARKUP LANGUAGE. For example, it defines the TAGS that can appear, their order, and which tags can appear within other tags. A PARSER processes the document type definition and checks any document that claims to conform to the definition. Usually abbreviated to DTD.
