chat room The visual interface which displays the messages and responses of participants who are using ONLINE CHAT. Often chat rooms are implemented via WEB PAGES. Chat rooms are usually devoted to special topics such as US politics; however, there are a number of general chat rooms which are devoted to any issue the participants wish to bring up. Some chat rooms are sophisticated three-dimensional areas where participants can choose an icon known as an AVATAR to represent their presence in the chat room. Chatting normally occurs on a CHANNEL, and participants must join a channel before they can start talking to other users. Participants usually communicate by typing their contributions into a simple text box line by line.
