cable television
cable television The technology of delivering television-quality pictures to the home using
BROADBAND technology. Such technology is becoming prevalent in areas with dense populations and is seen as one way to deliver fast Internet access to homes. Previously the technology used for delivering television was uni-directional—the pictures were just sent to the television set, with nothing being sent the other way—and so was unsuitable for the bi-directional signals that, for example, are required for Web access. Consequently one of the major efforts that cable television operators have made, and are making, has been to replace old cabling with bi-directional cabling which is suitable for Internet access.
