automatic number identification Digital telephone systems are now able to detect the number of a telephone which is initiating a call. This is known as automatic number identification; it is increasingly being used to ensure that only telephones whose number matches a list of authorized phones are allowed to carry out DIAL-UP ACCESS to a network. It is also known as CALLING LINE IDENTIFICATION.
