World Wide Web Consortium
World Wide Web Consortium A collection of hardware companies, software companies, content providers, corporations, government organizations, and educational institutions which specify standards for Web technologies such as
HTML,
XML, and
CASCADING STYLE SHEETS. It was set up in 1994 and was based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science Lab. It is now also hosted by two other institutions: Keio University in Japan and the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science. It is the initiator and repository of Web technology standards and reference software such as the
AMAYA experimental
BROWSER and the
JIGSAW experimental
SERVER. It issues standards, sample code, and reference implementations which are freely available at regular intervals. The standards that have been developed have to go through a formal process of being working drafts, proposed recommendations and finally recommendations. The W3C, as it is often known, is independent of software and hardware vendors and is funded by membership fees, research funds, and external contracts.
