Perl A programming language which is included in this dictionary because it has become the main language of programmers who carry out CGI PROGRAMMING. The language manipulates strings (sequences of characters) and contains facilities for searching for particular sequences of characters in a string, replacing parts of strings and creating new strings from other strings. It can also manipulate numbers and OBJECTS. It is currently being challenged by JAVA. See also SERVLET.
