Password Authentication Protocol

Password Authentication Protocol An AUTHENTICATION protocol that is used when connecting to an INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER. See also CHALLENGE HANDSHAKE AUTHENTICATION PROTOCOL. It is often abbreviated to PAP. It is less secure than the CHALLENGE HANDSHAKE AUTHENTICATION PROTOCOL because the PASSWORD that is passed to a server is sent as plain text.
