Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions Usually referred to as MIME. Each block of data sent to a BROWSER using the HYPERTEXT TRANSFER PROTOCOL is preceded by a text block which describes what type of data it is: whether, for example, it is a graphic or a sound clip, or plain text. Each block is known as a MIME TYPE. The standard which is used to construct such identifying blocks is the Multimedia Internet Mail Extensions standard. It enables the browser to work out which data it is about to receive and how to display it. Some examples of MIME types are text/plain which is plain text that is unformatted, text/html which is HTML formatted text, and image/jpeg which is an image that conforms to the JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP format.
