Joint Photographic Experts Group A popular format for BITMAPPED GRAPHICS frequently found on the WORLD WIDE WEB. It is usually abbreviated to JPEG. It is a graphic format which can describe images that can contain over 16.7 million colours. Consequently it is used when an image is a complex one with large number of colours and colour effects such as shading. Photographs are usually displayed on WEB PAGES using this format. A major advantage of the JPEG format is that it can be compressed, using a LOSSY COMPRESSION SCHEME, by a factor of up to 20 to 1 without any discernible degradation in the image.
