Hypertext Markup Language

Hypertext Markup Language The language used to develop documents which are to be placed on the WORLD WIDE WEB. It is usually known as HTML. As the name suggests it is a MARKUP LANGUAGE. It contains a number of TAGS which indicate what facility is required by the writer: for example, the tag <P> inserts a paragraph at the place where it occurs in a WEB PAGE. The language consists of facilities for a large number of textual features including paragraphs, headings, lists, and images. It also contains facilities for changing the look of particular elements of a Web page: for example, the colour of a section of text. An important part of HTML are the features in the language which enable HYPERLINKS to be embedded in it. In the past WEB PAGES were constructed by hand using simple program editors. However, there are now a wide variety of HTML EDITORS available which relieve the user of the tedium of writing HTML. Versions of HTML are each identified by an HTML LEVEL. A number of tools and HTML VALIDATION SITES are available for carrying out processes such as checking links for ORPHAN LINKS. When a document expressed in HTML is processed by a BROWSER, it interprets the tags in the document and displays it according to the meaning of the tags.
