Graphics Interchange Format

Graphics Interchange Format A GRAPHIC FORMAT standard used for images and an example of a BITMAPPED GRAPHIC format. It is the most popular image format currently being employed on the World Wide Web. It uses a compression scheme for transmission over the Internet known as LEMPEL ZIV WELSH CODING which is a LOSSLESS COMPRESSION SCHEME that results in no information being lost when the graphic is compressed. GIF supports 256 colours and is used on a Web page when colour depth is not important, or if there are a limited number of colours in an image. The current GIF format is GIF89A which has a number of additional features over earlier versions such as transparency. GIF ANIMATION is a popular technique used for developing simple animations suitable for Web pages. This format is supported by virtually all graphics programs.
