Data Encryption Standard

Data Encryption Standard A US government standard for a BLOCK CIPHER which employs a 56-bit SECRET KEY. The algorithm used in this standard has been the subject of a large amount of controversy since there has been a suspicion that there is a TRAPDOOR in it that allows the US government to eavesdrop on parties using the technology. There is, as yet, no evidence for this, but the suspicion lingers on in the computing community. The algorithm has been broken by a BRUTE FORCE ATTACK; however the original designers of the algorithm always envisaged that this might happen and posited that the resources that would be required would be so large that it would be highly unlikely to happen in practice. This standard has now been replaced by the ADVANCED ENCRYPTION STANDARD.
