Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire A European research centre for particle physics situated in Switzerland and France. It is the birthplace of the HYPERTEXT TRANSFER PROTOCOL, more commonly known as HTTP and the WORLD WIDE WEB. The centre had a massive demand for information from employees and HTTP was the result of a project to develop searching facilities for documentation over a network and to provide facilities for collaborative authoring. Usually abbreviated to CERN.
