CGI programming

CGI programming The process of programming a WEB SERVER so that it can interact with other applications such as DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. See also CGI SCRIPT and CGI BIN. In the past the chosen language for this type of programming was PERL. However, most servers now support Java SERVLETS and because of this there has been a very small decline in the use of Perl. The term is an abbreviation of COMMON GATEWAY INTERFACE, part of a Web server that needs to be accessed in order to carry out any non-trivial processing such as reading a FORM.
