Ghent, Treaty of (1815).The Treaty of Ghent between the United States and Great Britain ended the
War of 1812. Signed by American and British negotiators on 24 December 1814, the pact was ratified by the Senate in February 1815.
Negotiations to end the “Second Anglo‐American War” began soon after the war's start in June 1812. The United States proposed an armistice if the British would agree to stop boarding American merchant vessels on the high seas and seizing suspected deserters (a practice known as impressment) and stop capturing American merchant shipping destined for Napoleon's forces. Although the British had suspended their policy of ship seizures a week before the U.S. declaration of war, they refused to budge on impressment, and the talks failed. A Russian mediation effort collapsed in 1813.
In August 1814, talks between the two sides resumed in Ghent, Belgium, aided by the fact that Napoleon's defeat made one major point of contention moot. The final agreement essentially reestablished the prewar status quo, leaving unresolved the questions of impressment and neutral rights.
Insofar as the United States avoided concessions of territory or principle, the Treaty of Ghent represented an American diplomatic triumph. It cast a victorious glow over a conflict that had been for the most part a disaster on the battlefield. Thanks to the treaty (and the Battle of
New Orleans, fought two weeks after the treaty was signed), the bitterly divisive War of 1812 was popularly remembered as a victory.

Drawing the line: the 1783 Treaty of Paris ended the war between Britain and the U.S. But it didn't end boundary disputes. For the next sixty years, the British and the Americans clashed over an imaginary line separating colony from country. Then Lord Ashburton met Daniel Webster, and most of what would become the world's longest undefended border fell into place.
