Jeffrey, the latter as editor for the first 26 years.
Constable in Edinburgh and Longman's in London were the publishers. It followed a somewhat radical Whig line and its contributors included Henry
Brougham, Francis
Horner, Sydney
Smith,
Macaulay, and Thomas
Carlyle. ‘To be an
Edinburgh Reviewer’, wrote
Hazlitt, ‘is, I suspect, the highest rank in modern literary society.’ Though its great days were in the 1830s and 1840s, it survived until 1929.
