śāstra

śāstra (Skt., rule). Genre of literature opposed to the category of sūtra. The designation ‘sūtra’ is reserved for texts that are regarded as the word of the Buddha, whereas ‘śāstras’ are works composed by other authors. These consist of treatises on all matter of learned topics as well as commentaries on other works. The Pāli equivalent of the term is sattha, but is rarely found.
