samādhi
samādhi (Skt.).
1. A state of deep trance. In Buddhist teachings this is defined as ‘one-pointed’ concentration or composure of mind (
citta-ekāgratā) and is the result of meditative focus on a single wholesome object. Later
Mahāyāna sources mention a vast number of different samādhis by name and their attainment is said to lead to the ability to manifest certain specific
miracles through the associated development of higher knowledge (
abhijñā).
2. The second of the three divisions of the
Eightfold Path, comprising the factors of Right Effort (samyag-vāyāma), Right Mindfulness (samyak-smṛti), and Right Meditation (samyak-samādhi).
