hell. Buddhism has no concept of hell as a place of eternal punishment, and its notion of post-mortem retribution is closer to the Western notion of purgatory. The accumulation of bad
karma can lead to
rebirth in one of a number of
hells (Skt., naraka; Pāli, niraya), often vividly depicted in popular art and folklore. There are said to be both hot hells and cold hells, each with numerous subdivisions where evil-doers are tormented by demons until their bad karma has run its course and they are reborn in a better state. The deepest of all the hells is
