Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra A huge encyclopedic Yogācāra work, attributed variously to Maitreya or Asaṅga but in all probability the work of several writers who compiled it around the 5th century ce. The complete work comprises five major sections embracing seventeen levels (bāhu-bhūmi), which covers the entire range of mental and spiritual levels in Buddhism according to the Mahāyāna. The five divisions are (1) the compendium of definitions (viniścaya-saṃgrahaṇī); (2) the compendium of exegesis (vivaraṇa-saṃgrahaṇī); (3) the compendium of synonyms (paryāya-saṃgrahaṇī); (4) the compendium of bases (vastu-saṃgrahaṇī); and (5) the compendium of the Vinaya (vinaya-saṃgrahaṇī). Most of the bāhu-bhūmi section—which includes such seminal works as the Bodhisattvabhūmi and the Śrāvakabhūmi—survives in Sanskrit but little survives from the other parts, although the entire work is available both in Chinese and Tibetan translation.
