Pŏpsŏng jong

Pŏpsŏng jong. A school of Buddhist thought indigenous to Korea. The name means ‘school of dharma-nature’, and it concentrated its study on the ultimate nature of phenomena (dharmas) rather than their individual, distinguishing characteristics. In this vein, it focused primarily on the doctrines of the embryonic Buddha (tathāgata-garbha) and the storehouse consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna). Its initial formation is credited to the Korean Buddhist scholar Wŏnhyo (617–86).
