Kyoto school. A school of zen Buddhist studies in 20th-century Japan that combines traditional Zen learning with influences from European, primarily German, philosophy. The founder of this school is generally acknowledged to be Nishida Kitarō (1870–1945), whose writings, such as An Inquiry into the Good (1911), Intuition and Reflection in Self-Consciousness (1917), and his major work Fundamental Problems of Philosophy (1933), enunciated an experiential understanding of ‘nothingness’ and ‘the identity of contradictories’ based in his own early Zen training and enlightenment (satori), but here expressed in conversation with European mystics and German idealism. After Nishida, the inquiries of the school were carried forward by Tanabe Hajime (1885–1962), Hisamatsu Shin'ichi (1889–1980), and Nishitani Keiji (1900–90).
