Jōjitsu school
Jōjitsu school. One of the
Six Schools of
Nara Buddhism that flourished under government patronage during the early period of Japanese Buddhism. This school took as its focus the
Satyasiddhi Śāstra written by the Indian sage
Harivarman during the 3rd century. This text's teachings were
Sautrantika in form and very similar to those of the
Madhyamaka school, which was represented in
Japan at the time by the
Sanron school, and the Jōjitsu school later became identified with it. Harivarman had sought to establish the emptiness of both persons and phenomena by analysing both into smaller and smaller building blocks, until at the end nothing could be found.
