Dalai Lama XIV

Dalai Lama XIV (1935– ). Tenzin Gyatso (Tib., bstan-'dzin rgya-mtsho). The current Dalai Lama now living in exile. Following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, he tried to protect Tibetan interests through cooperation with the Chinese but, after the 1959 uprising, he eventually fled to India where he is now resident in Dharamsala. Well-known for his tolerence, humility, and tireless efforts to further the Tibetan cause internationally, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
