Shintai (Jap., ‘kami body’). In Shinto, the symbol of the kami or object in which the spirit of the kami is believed to reside, used as the object of worship in a shrine. Also called mitama-shiro (‘august spirit symbol’), it is housed within the innermost chamber (honden) of the shrine sanctuary.
