Quakers. Usual name for the Society of
Friends. It was first given in the mid-17th cent. to the followers of George
Fox. Its derivation is uncertain: it may be derived from an occasion when, in 1650, Fox told a judge in Derby to ‘tremble at the Word of the Lord’; or from an existing women's sect; or from the ‘spiritual trembling’ experienced at meetings.
