Indra. Supreme God of the Indo-Āryans, to whom (except for
Agni) more hymns are addressed in the
Ṛg Veda than to any other. He is the dispenser of rain and source of fruitfulness, who is himself sustained by vast quantities of
soma. His strength is represented by his thunderbolt (
vajra). He is found also in Jain and Buddhist mythology (as Sakka).
