Dualism (Lat., dualis). The conjunction of two (usually opposing) entities or principles. The term was used by T. Hyde in 1700 (The Ancient Persian Religions) to describe the conflict between good and evil (Ormazd and Ahriman) in Zoroastrianism; but it is used of many religious and philosophical dualities, e.g. mind and matter (as in Cartesian dualism), material and spiritual (as in Manichaeism), yin and yang.
