Dualism (Lat.,
dualis). The conjunction of two (usually opposing) entities or principles. The term was used by T. Hyde in 1700 (
The Ancient Persian Religions) to describe the conflict between good and
evil (Ormazd and Ahriman) in
Zoroastrianism; but it is used of many religious and philosophical dualities, e.g. mind and matter (as in Cartesian dualism), material and spiritual (as in
Manichaeism),
yin and yang.
