Cult. A term which refers to many non-traditional religious movements. Academics sometimes contrast cults with sects (see
CHURCH-SECT TYPOLOGY) on the grounds that the former (e.g.
Cargo cults) are more alienated from traditional religions than the latter (e.g.
Jehovah's Witnesses); or that cults are more innovatory.
