Anusim (Heb., ‘forced ones’). People compelled unwillingly to convert from Judaism to another faith. Instances of forced conversion have occurred throughout Christian history and include the baptism of the Jewish community of Clermont– Ferrand in 576 CE, compulsory conversions in the Rhineland in the 10th cent. and the Conversos or Marranos of Christian Spain.
