apartment. Self-contained set of rooms for domestic use (also called a flat), on one floor, usually one of several in a large building. If the apartment extends over more than one floor it is called a duplex. Apartments were known in Ancient Rome, and were common in C17 Paris. Glasgow and Edinburgh have many outstandingly fine C18 and C19 apartments within handsome stone-built edifices, numerous tall blocks containing apartments were built in NYC from the 1890s, and the type evolved when elevators or lifts were developed. C20 apartment-blocks of note include the Lake Shore Drive Apartments, Chicago, IL (1950–1—with steel frames), by Mies van der Rohe and the Unité d'Habitation at Marseilles (1946–52), by Le Corbusier.
