ancon, anconis (pl. ancones).
1. Console resembling a scrolled bracket, narrower at the bottom than at the top (i.e. wedge-shaped in elevation), also acting as an arch keystone, often carrying an ornamental element.

2. Console, crossette, shouldering-piece, or truss supporting each end of the cornice over the antepagmenta of apertures in Classical architecture, and properly wedge-shaped or tapering, although the term is loosely given to parallel-sided consoles, parotides, or prothyrides.

3. Quoin or two adjacent sides of a rectangle.

4. Cramp employed in masonry to join two stones.

5. Projection left on a column-shaft drum to enable it to be lifted by ropes.
