Kampmann, Hack (1856–1920). Danish architect. He was a protagonist of the
National Romantic movement that drew on traditional and
vernacular forms as well as on themes from the
Rundbogenstil. He designed the Regional Archives, Viborg (1889–91), and the Custom House (1895–7), Theatre (1897–1901—with touches of
Jugendstil), and State Library (1898–1902), all in Aarhus. Influenced by the strong Danish tradition of
Neo-Classicism, he was responsible for the New Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen (1901–6—with a stepped pyramidal roof over the centrepiece), and, with Anton Frederiksen (1884–1967), Holger
Jacobsen, and Aage
Rafn, designed the Copenhagen Police Headquarters (1919–24), one of the finest C20 Neo-Classical essays in Scandinavia. His son,
Christian Peter Georg Kampmann (1890–1955), designed the distinguished State School, Viborg (1918–26), combining Neo-Classicism with aspects of
Modernism. He was also responsible for the Railway Station, Teheran, Iran (
c.1935).
