Grassi, Giorgio (1935– ). Italian architect, born in Milan, he was influenced by the work of
Rossi and
Tessenow, and has been classified as an Italian
Neo-Rationalist. His student residential hostel, Chietí (1976), in the form of a long colonnaded street, recalls the C19 proposals of
Weinbrenner for the Lange Strasse, Karlsruhe (1808), in its severely stripped
Classicism. His works include
La Costruzione logica dell'architettura (1967) and
Architettura: lingua morta (Architecture: Dead Language—1988). He has insisted that architecture is made up of fundamental elements expressive of their purpose and responsive to social conditions, and that the architect's job is to clarify. He distils his architecture from primary forms.
